Pioneering digital transformation in the education sector
The Association of Registrars of the Universities and Colleges Canada (ARUCC) is pioneering digital transformation in the education sector through MyCreds® | MesCertif® — Canada’s national digital credentialing initiative. With a mission to empower learners, increase mobility, and enable trusted verification of academic achievements, MyCreds® | MesCertif® is redefining how institutions, learners, employers, and regulators interact with credentials.
the challenge
Modernizing credentialing
Traditionally, verifying academic records involved paper-based processes, institutional silos, and delays that undermined learner mobility and trust. ARUCC sought to modernize credentialing by enabling real-time, secure, and verifiable web and digital credentials accessible through a learner-driven ecosystem.

the challenge
Meeting evolving needs
Recognizing the evolving needs of credential issuers, learners, and the workforce, ARUCC introduced mobile credentials (mDocs) as an additional channel. These:
Work across multiple verification channels, online or offline
Preserve privacy, giving holders control of their data
Serve diverse relying parties (employers, agencies, institutions)
Are secure and tamper-resistant
This addition supports broader acceptance and unlocks new possibilities for portability and trust — while continuing to support web-based delivery methods that many learners and institutions still rely on.
the solution
Partnership with MATTR
To expand credentialing options, ARUCC partnered with MATTR to add a digital wallet and verifier app channel to the MyCreds® ecosystem. This collaboration enabled:

Support tools such as a Trust Registry and Verifier App
Together, these MATTR-powered components complement the other SaaS solutions that power the wider MyCreds ecosystem, ensuring learners can securely claim and present digital credentials while preserving choice in how their data is shared.
Evolving the ecosystem
The MyCreds vision has expanded beyond transcripts to include:
- Academic documents of all types
- Co-curricular programs
- International verification
- Government-issued enrolment, visa, or student loan documents
- Skilled trades and workforce mobility initiatives
Serving the trades
A notable expansion was the launch of a mobile app tailored to trades workers. It allows them to store and share verified credentials directly from their phones, supporting Canada’s push for interprovincial job mobility.
Supporting member data maturity
Part of enabling portability is helping institutions evolve their credential issuance practices. In Fall 2025, MyCreds® launched an outreach program to support members in adopting data issuance pathways alongside traditional web formats. This initiative is not about eliminating web issuance — which remains vital — but about empowering learners to choose how their credentials are consumed, whether web-based or through a digital wallet.

By enabling mDocs and prioritizing privacy and interoperability, MyCreds® is not just a credentialing service — it is a scalable, inclusive, and trusted infrastructure setting a global benchmark, while continuing to support web-based delivery that many members and learners depend on.
“The launch of the Member Trust Registry is a transformative milestone for the ARUCC MyCreds® | MesCertif® ecosystem. In collaboration with MATTR, we’re elevating trust and security standards in digital credentialing, which will benefit our members, learners and credential holders across Canada.”

Executive Director, MyCreds® | MesCertif® Alignment with Canadian frameworks
Canada’s federal guidance emphasizes standards-based, interoperable digital credentials rather than a single format. In practice, three widely recognized formats are in scope across government and industry: ISO/IEC 18013 mDoc for high-assurance mobile credentials, W3C Verifiable Credentials for general digital credentials, and Open Badges 3.0 for education credentials. As a national initiative, MyCreds aligns with these standards, with MATTR powering the digital wallet channel alongside other partners delivering complementary capabilities.
